Outside Dinghy Rack

At the working bee stickers were put on boats in the outside dinghy racks asking the owners to make contact.

Some people did make contact and we have been able to verify ownership of all but 3 dinghies. Obviously the owners of those dinghies were not at the working bee

If you have a dinghy on the outside racks but have not received an invoice then make contact with Bruce Swane on 0414 959 747 immediately otherwise we take no responsibility for your boat. Similarly if you know somebody who has a dinghy there, then get them to be in contact.

There are at least 3 free space available and the first 3 members to contact Bruce will be allocated a spot for their dinghy.

If the 3 unclaimed dinghies do not make contact then there will also be a further 3 spaces available shortly.

The 2012/2013 Etchells State Titles have now been successfully conducted by the club over the weekend of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of March. We had 37 competitors with boats from Qld, Victoria and Western Australia as well as all NSW fleets

The first 2 days sailing was blown out. Friday we did not even leave the beach, Saturday looked better but the seas meant we could not get a course in, and even on sunday it was touch and go as to whether the race committee would hold the races. In the end we threw some marks in the water and got in 4 really good races, albeit in over 3 metre seas and a big wind chop which made for a challenging upwind and an exciting downhill ride. The Etchells were even being pooped by waves breaking over their sterns. Good to see boats running downhill with all sails simply flapping as they ran ahead of the breeze down the waves.

Cronulla fleet had mid fleet results but David McKay and crew sailed well to pick up the grand masters trophy. (young Tim a grand master???????)
Other boats picked up prizes for positions in various heats.

A regatta such as this cannot run without support and in this regard special mention has to be made of our sponsors.

Nautica Watches was the principal sponsor providing multiple prizes of watches to be given away as overall prizes, for bow number draws in individual heats and for the raffle conducted in conjunction with the series. If you are in the market for a sailing watch, remember the support they have given us and there is even a special code (ask Don Chapple) which gives a 20% discount.
The watches looked so good that several competitors made an arrangement that although they might not have won a watch they bought one on the sly to take home and show their better halves what a fabulous win they achieved for all the money spent on the boat.

Powerade provided much needed sustenance for the competitors which was much needed to do 4 races in one day.

Estate Wine Distributors provided some of their Stonefish wines to be provided to heat winners and also for the raffle

North Sails have traditionally provided a new Etchells jib for the mid fleet boat and when that would have gone to a Norths sailor in the overall results, generously adjusted how the winner was to be determined so that another boat received this great prize.

Thank you to Tooheys for providing samples of their most delicious ale. When it was put out on saturday night it was if a flock of seagulls had found a bag of chips. Made for a most convivial evening. The support from Tooheys was arranged through the good offices of Reg Dolden.

Thank you to all our sponsors for your support.

The members of the Cronulla Etchells fleet, and none more so than Jon Harris, put in a mountain of work to get the series away and other than Jon no individual mentions. It is the other members of the club that deserve special thanks. As per usual with Cronulla there are too many names to mention all but some people deserve special attention.

To Pete Cox for providing Valhalla as a mark boat and sitting at the top mark bobbing around in trying conditions.

To Steve O'Rourke for providing bottled water and the use of the Protector as the pin boat. Steve forewent his sailing to help run the series.

To Reg Dolden for providing the beautiful Janice as a VIP and support boat. Some of the guests got quite green around the gills, but the media people were provided with a platform par excellence thanks to Reg.

To the start boat crew for a sterling effort but particularly to Andrew McLachlan from GRSC who came in as PRO and provided professional expertise necessary when handling a fleet of this calibre.

To Bruce McKay and Michael Druce for collating the results, several times, as protests and arbitration ebbed and flowed and changed the finishing order.

To Dennis Mccllarren and Col Nielsen, who as usual were always there when anything needed doing

To the dinghy section for cancelling their sunday sailing to enable the Etchells to have clear rigging deck space and the support boats necessary to conduct safe racing.

And a special mention to Paul Kelly and Bucho who were not only involved in organising the event but were on hand each day. On the sunday they spent a most pleasant day in the Alufarm, two miles off Cronulla, in over three metre seas. With as much good grace and humour as they could muster they had to move the top mark, as the breeze shifted, I think but did not keep accurate count, six times. By the end, Bucho had no fingers left.

This was the second major regatta our club has conducted this season, the other being the Finn Nationals at Christmas, and it is with great pride that one looks on what we can achieve. Thank you to all the volunteers. You really are the backbone.

More National Champions

NS14 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Over the Christmas New Year period Bryce Edwards and his crew Amanda Stern ventured down to Tasmania to compete in the 44th NS14 National Titles, hosted by the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club.  PDYC is situated on the Tamar River (north of Launceston) and provided 10 days of almost perfect sailing weather with the breeze rarely falling below 12 knots and reaching 25 knots at times.
Sailing "Tempest" in 10 races over 6 days they had their backs against the wall after day three recording five second places with the first place NS14 "Arctic" achieving 5 straight bullets. The equation was simple, to win the Nationals they had to win the last 5 races and rely on a count back to win.
Race 6 with nothing to lose saw Bryce and Amanda achieve their first win after the lead had changed a number of times.
Day four (News Years Eve) PDYC Race Committee scheduled just one long race. The course was longer than the previous days and the breeze was gusting to 20 plus knots.  Bryce and Amanda came into their own with this breeze and they were hitting their straps at the crucial part of the series.  Another win and the confidence was growing - just maybe they could achieve the impossible.
Well rested after the Lay Day and back on the water for two more races with the forecast 15 to 20 knots from the North.  "Tempest" achieved  Bullet Bullet and with two drops coming into play the result would be determined on the last day of sailing.  Simple scenario evolved - the winner would be whoever crossed the line in front of the other.
Last day dawned and the forecast was for lighter breezes however once the competitors hit the course the breeze was well over 15 knots.  Bryce and Amanda had a cracking start and approached the top mark in second place 5 boats ahead of Arctic.  After the two reaching legs Tempest was a clear leader with Arctic sailing into 3rd position.  Bryce and Amanda applied a loose cover up the second windward work and was nearly 40 seconds ahead for the down wind run.  Pressure was mounting as Arctic stole a few seconds and drew closer with one full triangle and a final work to the finish.  Top mark and Tempest had extended the lead to nearly a minute and only needed steady sailing to win.  Very controlled tight reaches had Tempest approximately 50 seconds ahead of Arctic with only the work to the finish to go.   With the local press on the finish line and very controlled sailing Tempest extended her lead and the Title was Bryce and Amanda's.  The scream was unbelievable and they had achieved a remarkable comeback.
Congratulations to Bryce and Amanda for an outstanding achievement "National Champions".
Three years of hard work and preparations and following their 3rd placing in the Nationals last year they had achieved their dream.

Ace Gutters Corporate Day

ACE Gutters Corporate Day

Thanks to the 14 skippers who made their yachts available for the day along with the 100 club members and business partners who made the day a great success. Being a Voluntary Club we are extremely in debt for your support.
A great day was had by all with some nice close racing enjoyed.

We are extremely thankful for the Support from ACE Gutters Don Anderson for the day, with all money raised going to keep our Support Vessels on the water.
Also a big thanks to Sanity, Crafos Metal Spinning and Colortile for their prizes on the day. Thanks also to Sean from Ace Gutters and Bruce McKay from Bemac Security for taking the large cat out.
With the race starting at 1.00pm sharp, the so called slower boats were out and around the first lap in no time. It wasn’t long before the first retirement, with Misbehaving living up to their name with a backstay blowout due to the overzealous strength of an unnamed crewman.  The large Estuary Course was the call for the day and it was good to see some visitors steering the yachts. I know that on our yacht the "first time ever" sailors really enjoyed the experience  and many smiling faces were seen on all yachts.

The Start Boat did a great job in controlling those yachts that were sailing  well above their handicaps, with many Red Flag penalties to those extremely well sailed yachts.  Thanks to Kell, Macca and Swaney  for their start boat skills not only for the Corporate Day but also for the Season to date.
Plenty of food, prawns and oysters for all back at the Club with some cool cleansing ales thrown down  for good measure!
It was a long day for many with some supporters still there at closing time, looking a little wearier after their big day boating.
Once again thanks to all that supported the day! and those that did not “ Oh well bad luck” and get organised for December next year.

Yours  for CSC  Sailing  Bucko

Paralympic Report - Jon Harris

Hi all.

Our campaign is over and unfortunately we bombed it. After a great start, and being in the medals earlier in the regatta the race committee put on 3 races yesterday because light winds the day before only allowed 1 race. We ended up with a 3rd, a 6th and 9th. Our main competition did better, and we were pushed back to 6th overall 7 points behind silver and 6 points behind bronze. Our only hope was one more scheduled race today, but it was cancelled due to lack of winds. It Was heart breaking to see the ceremony today knowing we had been in a podium position, only to blow it on the last day.
Our only consolation was that the Brits, who protested us on a technicality after an incident on day 2 , which we felt was totally unfare and giving us a disqualification, also bombed out. They were also in medal contention, and we're penalized after illegally lifting there boat out of the water and cleaning the keel, after faking that they needed to carry out repairs they were penalised and we're put back to 5th place by the international jury. They are furious, and have had 4 attempts to redress the protest, all denied, and they are now threatening legal action by international arbitration. This has been really ugly. The Brits have been in the protest room either protesting sailors or the race committee throughout the series and everyone is sick of them. These guys get paid to sail, they are all on good money funded by th UK lottery system, so there were big expectations for them to get a medal. Had the Brits not protested us, we would have been in Bronze at the end, so you can understand our feelings towards them.

We also beat team USA who were ahead of us early in th regatta. The final winners were Holland , Germany and Norway.

We don't really have any excuses for not doing well, apart from we seemed to be on the wrong side of wind shifts on too many occasions yesterday. Our boat speed was always good, but these teams are very close and i now realise you have to be a meteorologist to do well.

It's not all bad for the AST though, Dan and Leisl got gold in the Skud class, beating arch rivals, the Brits. There will be a story on te ABC news tonight ( Friday Night) for those interested.

Jon.
